Join us for LINER NOTES Crazy Sexy Cool by TLC!!
Open Mic Signups open @ 7:45
(First Come-First Served – 6 Open Mic Spots)
Every once in awhile, we take a break from competing with each other and working on competitive performance to sit back, appreciate some music, and write some new shit. (NEW SHIT!)
We pick an album, poets sign up in advance to be randomly assigned a song from that album, and they then compose a new piece inspired by that song, and read it in our Liner Notes showcase!
Liner Notes is a celebration and poetic tribute of the artist’s album and a showcase of new work by local poets. Liner Notes began in Seattle, WA at Rain City Slam in 2011 and is inspired by a show in Vancouver B.C. titled “Mashed Poetics”, in which a classic album is chosen and each song is assigned to a poet as writing prompt to create new work to perform at the show, as well as a live band that covers the entire album, with costumes.
Poets participating in Liner Notes will earn points towards our Slam Season Finale show, The Steel City GRAND SLAM, which is where we will select our 2018 team of poets to represent Pittsburgh at the National Poetry Slam in Chicago, IL!
All Liner Notes Poets Receive – 2 points!
Before the show from 6:00-7:30pm there will be a free writing circle for poets aged 13-19yrs, facilitated by one of Steel City’s certified Youth Educators. For more information please visit the Young Steel facebook page at
The Steel City Slam is a Free Speech Zone! Poets may say whatever they like on our mic! This means you may hear: cuss words, mature themes, or difficult and/or triggering content on our microphone. HOWEVER, we remind the audience they ALSO have the power of free speech, and are encouraged to respond accordingly to content presented on the mic. We advise our poets and audience to be respectful to one another and engage each other in conversation about the content of the poetry and behaviour presented on and off our stage.
Steel City is Certified as a Poetry Slam Inc Venue and a Fiscally Sponsored Project of PSI (501c3)
